Accessed west of 100 Mile House BC, this chain of 12 wilderness lakes is prime for watching wildlife like moose, sand cranes and bald eagles. For bird watching without the energetic trek, head west of Highway 97 to the town's eight hectare wetland marsh. 100 Mile House BC, the self-professed "International Nordic Ski Capital" (and who can argue with a town that displays the world's largest pair of cross-country ski outside its Visitor Info Centre), offers a 200 km/125 mi machine groomed trail system. No wonder the local Cariboo Marathon attracts an international field of skiers every February. Other winter activities include snowmobiling, dog sledding, ice fishing and downhill skiing.
